Tim Lord wasn’t sure he wanted to be an engineer when he entered WVU. He was in the National Guard. He researched the various majors and Industrial Engineering stood out to him as a good career fit.
When Tim graduated, he went to work for Kingston Timer a company that supports the appliance industry. He was asked to help the company become ISO 9000 complaints.
The plant manager at Kingston Timer was a mentor for Tim and when the plant manager moved on to a position in the sporting goods industry, he asked Tim to join him.
Tim joined the Worth Company in a role that involved product development, sales, and business development. He moved up through the company and eventually became the Vice President with responsibility for baseball/softball bats. This represented one-third of the company’s business.
Tim maintained his service in the National Guard for 21 years and retired after 21 years. At the time of his retirement, Tim was the Commander of the Tennessee National Guard.
Tim continued his career in sports equipment when he joined the Combat unit of the Performance Sports Group. Performance is a leading developer and manufacturer of ice hockey, roller hockey, lacrosse, baseball and softball sports equipment. Its brands are well recognized in their respective sports.
Tim’s role at Combat is branding strategy, product development, and sales. Product development in the sports industry has a major role in the acceptance of the product. “You have to be very good at designing in competitive advantages within the regulated standards of the sports,” Time explains.
One of the challenges of the sports equipment industry is to constantly adapt to population changes. “We see a real shift in product demand as the population gets older,” Tim explains. “That makes product development critical.”
