When John Altieri came to WVU he wasn’t sure what his career path would be. He started in Mining Engineering because his father worked in the industry. He transferred to Industrial Engineering because he wanted an engineering degree with more of a business focus.
John started his career with Howmet Aluminum in Texas with a traditional Industrial Engineering role. Over the next ten years, John changed divisions of Howmet about every 2 years and generally took on a new role. One of John’s assignments was to be a department superintendent in one of the manufacturing facilities. “This was a great experience,” John says. “I got to make the changes that I previously recommended. But I also saw how some of my recommendations just wouldn’t work.” As it turns out, this experience was critical to John’s eventual career in consulting.
John advises students who want to pursue consulting as a career path to develop a specific area of emphasis.
John left Howmet and worked for a while at McDonnell Douglas and International Aluminum. During this time, he worked a lot with consultants. One of these consulting groups, United Research Company (URC) hired John to be a consultant. John was able to use his process analysis skills, but also began to see a greater emphasis on the soft skills such as listening and asking questions. Eventually John because Vice President of URC.
John’s career would eventually involve two additional senior executive positions in consulting firms: AT Kearney and James Miller and Company. These positions involved strategy and operations integration.
John has had assignments around the world. If he were to do anything different in his career it would have been to accept one of the longer term overseas assignments offered to him. He also wishes he would have acquired an additional language. “I grew up in an Italian-American family,” John says, “but I never learned to speak Italian.”
John advises students who want to pursue consulting as a career path to develop a specific area of emphasis. “You need to have a unique knowledge set to become a consultant,” John says.

During 25 years of experience as a Management Consultant and Senior Advisor to clients in Energy, Utility, Chemicals, and other industries, John has partnered with executives, managers, and front-line supervisors to achieve measureable bottom-line results. He has demonstrated leadership excellence by successfully integrating strategy, organization structure, business processes, systems, people, and culture to implement sustainable business improvements. His consulting experience includes client engagements in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
