Arvind Krishnappa came to WVU in 1994. He chose WVU since it was the only school that offered him an assistanceship. His area of interest was operations research and Dr. Iskander was his advisor.
When Arvind graduated, he went to work for Avis Rent-a-Car as an operations research analyst. Originally Arvind worked for Avis under the OPT (Optional Practical Training) program. Avis sponsored him for a Green Card. He was able to gain U.S. citizenship after a number of years and significant legal costs.
While at Avis, Arvind realized that he had the theoretical background he needed, but also needed more computer skills to operationalize models he was developing. Arvind gained a second master’s degree in Computer Science at NYU part time.
Arvind decided to pursue a career in a new industry and decided to apply his skills in the finance industry. He secured a position as a Senior Programming Analyst at Morgan Stanley. He was at Morgan Stanley for a little over a year.
Arvind then transferred to JP Morgan Chase. At JP Morgan Chase, Arvind worked on credit risk management, pricing/profitability management for auto financing, funding analytics, and loan pricing and valuation.
When asked if there was a sense of the coming of the great recession, Arvind comments: “We were concerned about growing loan delinquencies. What we didn’t foresee was the liquidity crisis. JP Morgan Chase didn’t invest in risky financial products and wasn’t hurt as much as other financial institutions. The payment incentives were wrong since they didn’t consider the loan risks, but just looked at the volume of loans.”
When asked about the role of an operations research analyst in a financial organization, he comments: “We really need different perspectives. My problem solving skills are a great asset. I’m able to test different risk scenarios, assign probabilities and do expected value pay off analysis.”
Arvind moved from JP Morgan Chase to an entrepreneurial financial institution where he is now an Executive Vice President. Santander Consumer focuses on automotive financing. With a focus on risk analysis, Arvind often has to walk a fine line of expressing risk concerns without dampening the entrepreneurial nature of the organization.
When asked about the challenges of being from another country and working in the U.S., Arvind comments: “Many of our top leaders in the financial industry and consulting are from international backgrounds. In my 22 year career, I‘ve had an American boss, followed by two Russian bosses and now an American boss whose family immigrated from Palestine.”
We are a richer nation because of the intellectual talent of students who come to America to study and choose to stay for their careers.
