Greg Ford always thought he wanted a career that involved business. It was a presentation on Industrial Engineering that helped him decide on his college major. “IE was the only engineering major that talked about how you could use your degree in the business world. That’s what convinced me,” Greg remembers.
His first two years of college were a struggle. He met his future wife when he was a sophomore. He struggled with maintaining focus. When he moved into his junior year and started taking his IE courses, he became more focused. Project groups really helped him stay on track. He also got a lot of help from his advisor.
After graduation, he had a chance to interview with Mylan. His advisor helped him with the confidence he needed to do well in the interview. He got the job and stayed at Mylan for 13 years. When Greg finished his career at Mylan, his office was just down the hall from Mike Puskar, the founder of Mylan. “Mike was a wonderful leader and mentor,” Greg says.
Greg was being recruited to join other pharmaceutical companies. The next phase of Greg’s career involved a series of senior leadership positions of pharmaceutical companies. A lot of his work at this time was new business development.
Currently Greg is involved in buying pharmaceutical assets and then repositioning them for sale. These transactions have had valuations worth close to $1 billion dollars. These are very complex transactions and Greg is often across the table from Ivy League MBA’s. “I’m proud to say that my WVU IE and MBA degrees have given me the training I needed to successfully compete against graduates from what many individuals perceive as more prestigious institutions,” Greg says.
Two things that Greg is still proud of are finding a mistake in the Finance book used in his MBA course. He reported the error to the author and received a cash award in recognition. He also got a personal letter from his Economics teacher in his MBA program commending him for getting a 100% on the final and being the top student tin the class.
“I could have given up in my first two years,” Greg recalls, “but my advisor gave me the confidence that I could succeed. I am very proud to have graduated from WVU and appreciative with the learnings I received in my IE and MBA courses.
